Is it better to have a bookkeeper or an accountant?
Actually, it's better to have both. Accountants are going to get your taxes filed. They are typically great at getting the forms filled out correctly, and understanding where to look for deductions. Bookkeepers, are great at making sure you have everything categorized correctly and with enough granular detail to not only make the accountant's job easier, but also to help you get deep insights into your business. The better you define each transaction on the front end, the better you can understand your business later and be more profitable. Bookkeepers live for this kind of detail.
What exactly does a bookkeeper do?
A bookkeeper's primary job is to evaluate every transaction for your business and accurately assign it to a specific category and/or sub-category, called "accounts". By doing this daily, and by having the right accounts set up in your accounting system, you can generate very detailed reports about your business and they reports can be used at the end of the year for filing your taxes. They can also be used to understand your business better. Spotting waste, managing vendors, new client targeting and acquisition, and so much more. A good bookkeeper is the key to a strong company.
How much does a bookkeeper cost vs accountant?
Bookkeepers are typically much less expensive than an accountant when it comes to the bookkeeping. Also, bookkeepers have the ability to be more focused on the granular details because it's all they do. Accountants provide higher-level services like tax prep, financial analysis, strategic planning and more. A virtual bookkeeper could cost $400-700/month, where an outside accounting firm would cost $1000-$2000/month.
What services does Morton Bookkeeping provide?
We offer done-for-you virtual bookkeeping using QuickBooks Online - Including account reconciliation, transaction categorization, financial reporting, and year end preparation for tax filing. We also offer 1099 prep and filing, QBO training, Business and Personal Tax Prep and Filing, Representation with the IRS, Monthly and Yearly Tax Strategy Consulting and more.
Do you handle accounts payable or receivable?
Not at this time. We currently focus on core bookkeeping functions to ensure accuracy and reliability in your financial reporting.
Do you provide payroll services?
We do not currently manage payroll directly, but we can coordinate with your payroll provider to ensure all transactions are accurately recorded in QuickBooks Online.
